About Us

  • About Dr. Smith Richard Smith, DO, is a board-certified psychiatrist at Florida Behavioral Medicine of Tampa in Tampa, Florida. He uses evidence-based solutions to treat patients suffering from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, insomnia, and more. Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science in physics and math from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He then went on to work on a doctorate in physics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The death of his father during the third year of his doctorate program led to the re-evaluation of goals and ultimately to medical school. In 2009, Dr. Smith completed medical school at Ohio University in Athens, where he obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He continued his medical education as an intern at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, New York. Before moving on to residency training, research interests led to work on a doctorate in biomedical engineering at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Dr. Smith finished his medical education by doing a residency in neuropsychiatry at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida. Dr. Smith is currently the Medical Director of the Behavioral Health Unit and Addiction Recovery Unit at Tampa Community Hospital. He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Medical Association, and the Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He relies heavily on neurophysiology and pharmacogenetics to treat patients and offers Spravato™, a nasal spray that’s often effective for patients with treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Smith maintains his credentials with continuing education to stay up to date with the latest advances in psychiatric medicine and care. He welcomes patients to Florida Behavioral Medicine of Tampa and looks forward to restoring their quality of life.
