• Veritas was founded on a vision: low impact, high quality, and first class arboreal and horticultural services mixed with strong interpersonal relationships. We did not plot this course arbitrarily, but only after long consideration and research. Why you may ask? Simply put, we saw the need for a change. The tree care industry has been transforming in the RDU area over the last few years as more and more players of various abilities enter the market. Regardless of their credentials, one thing is certain; the typical emerging business model is what we at Veritas refer to as “industrialized” arboriculture. In the rush to get ahead more and more companies descend on the client’s property with fleets of trucks, high impact machinery, and behemoth chippers in order to run through the work like a juggernaut and thus remain competitive. In such a model time is indeed money and talent is often secondary to machinery size. It is a model based on force, not finesse. We are committed to breaking that mold; so enters “small footprint” arboriculture. The seed was planted when our founder made a trip to Oxford and London in the United Kingdom. Despite the abundance of large and historical trees, the arborists in the country operated in a totally different fashion. Large equipment was virtually absent from all operations due to the narrow medieval streets and astounding fuel prices. Chippers and trucks were small and efficient, yet the attention given to the large London plane trees and historic oaks, whether at private residences, the Oxford University, or outside of Parliament, was impeccable. Further inquiry revealed that the arborists in England are viewed less like “tree trimmers” in the United States and more like a physician who makes horticultural house calls. They are respected tradesmen and academics, as one would expect from a country that prides itself on its professional guilds and orders. They are true practitioners of “small footprint” arboriculture. Picture Taking the concepts learned from British counterparts, it was clear that there was more to consider. American arborists trace their roots to the 19th century logging industry where advanced rigging, high line yarding, and high climbers roamed the forest of the Pacific Northwest harvesting the raw material that built the country (literally). Methods first developed by those loggers of old have continued to evolve into the advanced climbing and technical rigging capabilities used during large residential tree removals today. It was deemed essential that Veritas retain the capability to perform traditional removal operations while gleaning the best attributes of the low footprint European business model. The final piece of the puzzle lies in the realm of safety and education. It is not uncommon for a new tree industry employee to be “thrown to the wolves” utilizing the trial-and-error method of on-the-job training. Once he has earned his stripes by surviving the noise, hardship, and chaos he may just stick around to impart his knowledge to others in the same disjointed manner. Clearly this is unacceptable. At Veritas we integrate employee training from the very first moment utilizing our second-to-none phased training curriculum. Our technicians progress from basic level drills to advanced theory studies in the realm of safety, technical removals, and advanced tree and shrub biology/physiology. We strive to produce arborists with passion, not just workers seeking a wage while moving down the road of life. Furthermore, our routine safety forums, advanced trauma care and drivers training modules, and electrical hazard awareness program ensure that our people mitigate the risks of an inherently dangerous profession to the greatest extent possible (After all, there is no asset more important to us than our staff members).
