About Us

  • R. Wendell Phillips & Associates was founded in 1963.

The Harris House in Sharon, Massachusetts and remodeling the former Dedham Telephone Exchange into a church school for St. Paul's Episcopal Church were our first commissions.

The firm was first located at 35 Newbury Street where many house remodeling and new house designs were prepared. In 1966 we completed the Columbia Point Day Care Center for the Associated Day Care Services of Boston.

This project led to many Day Care Centers and Neighborhood Centers. The largest center was constructed in 1972 for Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses. This facility includes an elderly drop-in center, medical facility, swimming pool, gym and teenage recreation rooms. In 1976, the second floor was added doubling the capacity of the Health Center.

Mr. Phillips was the partner in charge of the Boston Office of Kent Cruise & Partners from 1967 to 1972. Many school and college facilities were designed in this Office.

The field of housing rehabilitation was started in 1968 with over 2000 units of rehabilitation as part of the Boston Rehabilitation Plan. The most interesting rehabilitation was the conversion of the Holtzer Cabot factory into 230 units of elderly housing for the Boston Housing Authority. This project was given the Housing and Neighborhood Facility Award in 1975.

The work of our firm is presently equally divided between historic restoration and new construction.

We recently completed our third project for the Department of the Air Force of Hansom Air Force Base, a lodging facility, which received the United States Air Force Design Award for excellence. The two former jobs for the Air Force are a Child Care Center and a Youth Center, both of which received AFSC Design Excellence Awards from the Air Force.

In Putman Connecticut we designed the conversion of the Montgomery Ward building in the shops and offices.

In 1978 our offices were located at 15 Harcourt Street, where we designed the rehabilitation of Worcester Housing Authority's Great Brook Valley Gardens and Curtis Apartments with the assistance of Donald Gillespie, A.I.A. and Douglas Haring, A.I.A. In Newburyport we converted the North Row into shops and apartments on the upper floors.

In 1990 we moved to Dedham, Massachusetts. Where we designed the conversion of the Springfield Charles Hotel into 156 apartments. Completed converting the Springfield YMCA into 99 units of housing, and the adjoining 150 car parking garage. In Chelsea we modernized their state funded housing. For Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses we designed a Health Center and Spar at their Field Corner Neighborhood Center.

In 1993 we moved to New London, New Hampshire. We have been designing many lake houses and mountain chalets and completing the Boston work including Judge John Connelly Youth Center for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Urban Edge Jamaica Plain Housing rehabilitation. Boston Built LLC commissioned us to design the Conversion of the St. Peter and Paul Church in to Condominiums. This design was given a Merit Award for Excellence in Architecture by the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Town of Springfield commissioned us to restore the Meeting House which included raising the building in order to build a new foundation, moving the furnace room to the basement, and increasing the size of the kitchen.
