About Us

  • Located in Berea, Ohio, a southwestern suburb of Cleveland, Berea Printing Company began in January 1967 as a part-time printing endeavor of father and son, Dick and Jim Dettmer. With a $400 initial investment, they purchased their first press, a used Multilith 1250, and put it in the basement of Dick's Eastland Road home in Berea. Once the necessary supplies were purchased, Berea Printing Company was ready for business. Their first customers included Berea Kiwanis Club, Dickey-Grabler Company, Berea Methodist Church and Baldwin-Wallace College. As word of mouth spread, the customer list grew and the variety of jobs expanded. To meet the increasing demand, equipment was added as funds were available over the next few years. By 1971, there was enough work steadily coming in to consider running the shop as a full-time printing business and the decision was made to expand. Berea Printing Company was incorporated soon after with Jim as sole stockholder. Later that year after much deliberation, Jim decided to leave his full-time job at Dickey-Grabler Company to head the business. Always a family collaboration, Jim's wife Linda took on many duties including collating, folding and typesetting. She worked from home and in the evenings until their two children were both in school. Then she joined Jim working full-time and managed the office until she retired after 30 years. In the Spring of 1974, more room was needed and Berea Printing Company moved out of Dick's basement and into a 1,000 square-foot attached space in downtown Berea. The subsequent purchase of two typesetting/printing businesses resulted in an ever-increasing amount of business. As business continued to grow, the print shop would move twice more into larger facilities located on Front Street. The increased space and workloads allowed for additional offset processes as well as a letterpress, digital presses, and other specialized equipment to support a higher capacity, volume and variety of products and services. Along with more equipment and more work, more employees were added to the staff as needed with very low turnover in key personnel in the following years. Continuing the family tradition, Jim’s son, Jeff Dettmer, now represents the third generation of the family to run Berea Printing Company. Born on Jim’s last day at his previous job, Jeff basically grew up in the company but officially joined in 1995 after graduating with a business degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. Berea Printing Company continues to expand and integrate services and products to keep pace with emerging technologies and changing customer needs. In addition to traditional printed items and design services, offerings now include unique and specialized targeted marketing products and integrated online marketing services including video marketing. After over 30 years on Front Street, Berea Printing Company is now located in a four-building complex in the North end of Berea that was purchased in 2012. The new facility has been customized and configured for maximum efficiency with a special consideration to minimize environmental impact in all areas of operation.
